Protecting Yourself From Imposter Fraud Scams
Imposter Scams were the leading type of fraud scam in 2023 and cost Americans over $2.6 billion. In one type of Imposter Scam, criminals use GenAI (generative artificial intelligence) models to create synthetic media and defraud both individuals and businesses.
Criminals use GenAI technology to first clone and/or replicate human voices gathered from the victims’ social media accounts or phone messages. They then impersonate the victim and contact the victim’s family member or friend convincing them to send money. In Maryland, these schemes included: convincing victims to send money to family members that supposedly needed bail money or had been kidnapped through cryptocurrency, a courier for an attorney, or other means to quickly send funds.
Taking Commonsense Steps Ahead of Time can minimize the chances that you will be victimized by these Imposter Fraud Scams:
- Create codewords or phrases among your family and/or employees to confirm your identity and don’t share these words by text or e-mail.
- Be cautious of any unsolicited call, hang up, and initiate a call yourself to reach your family member, friend, or the organization that purportedly called you.
- Don’t feel rushed and don’t click on links they have sent you by e-mail or text.
- If someone calls you and claims to be in danger such as a kidnapping situation, contact law enforcement immediately.
- Make your social media accounts private to minimize the chances of a criminal cloning your voice.
- Keep your passwords and login information secure, and use multifactor authentication (MFA), if available.
If you are a victim of fraud, immediately contact your bank, credit card company, or the app you used and see if the payment can be reversed or cancelled. Secure your on-line accounts, contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and file a report, alert the credit bureaus, and file a police report in the jurisdiction where you live. You can also file a report with the FBI’s Crime Complaint Center (IC3) if the fraud was on-line.
