Bicycling

The City of Rockville encourages bicycling for all residents of Rockville through education, infrastructure, and outreach. There are miles of shared-use paths, designated bike lanes, and roads with shared roadways markings within Rockville, and we strive to create a safe, well-connected network for bicycling in the city. 

The Bikeway Master Plan is a component of the Rockville 2040 Comprehensive Plan and provides a vision for a safe and efficient multimodal transportation system within Rockville. The plan acts as a guide for improving bicycle infrastructure and programs. 

Bicycle Registration

Registering your bike with the Rockville City Police Department makes it more likely that it could be recovered should it be lost or stolen. Once registered, bike owners are given a small sticker to attach to the bike frame. Here are some other tips to prevent bicycle theft.

Bicycle Friendly Community

The City of Rockville was recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Bronze level by the League of American Bicyclists in 2022. This award shows how far bicycling has come in Rockville as a sustainable, healthy, and equitable mode of transportation and recreation. The Bicycle Friendly Community program includes a specific designation for businesses interested in being recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business.

Bike Share

In partnership with Montgomery County, Rockville offers various bike sharing locations throughout the city. Short-term and long-term memberships are available.

Bike Rides in Rockville

Want to go for a bike ride in Rockville? The Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee regularly hosts a variety of bicycle rides throughout the city and neighboring areas. There are rides to match different bicycling abilities and showcase different parts of the city.

See below for a list of upcoming rides, and check out meetup.com/bike-rockville for more information, impromptu rides, and last-minute changes. To participate in rides, all riders must wear a helmet.

Saturday, May 2, 2026, 10 a.m.

Rockville officials join together with neighbors on a casual bike ride every year in May to celebrate National Bike Month. This kick-off ride starts at Rockville City Hall and is a six-mile loop exploring some of the city’s extensive and diverse bicycling infrastructure, including a few paths, bridges, and tunnels, using multiuse trails and quiet residential streets.

Friday, May 15, 2026, starting at 6:30 a.m.

Celebrate bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. Stop at the pitstops in Rockville Town Center and in Fallsgrove to receive a free t-shirt, refreshments, door prizes, and inspiration before you ride to work. Register online at biketoworkmetrodc.org to be counted as a cyclist.

Start a celebration or event at your school! Montgomery County requires anyone under age 18 to wear a bicycle helmet when riding or being carried on a bicycle, including a bicycle with training wheels, on a public street, right-of-way, sidewalk, or bicycle path in the county. Register your school and check walkbiketoschool.org for more details. Email the Department of Public Works at transportationinquiry@rockvillemd.gov for more ideas.

Wednesday, May 20, 2026, 6:40 p.m.

Meet at Rockville Town Center, in front of Rockville Memorial Library (21 Maryland Ave.). Bring a helmet and a bike in good working condition for a 10-mile police-escorted ride through neighborhoods to honor those who have been killed or injured on a bicycle. Riders must be comfortable riding on streets with traffic and ride approximately 10 miles in one hour. Check rideofsilence.com for additional information on this international event.

All rides begin at 6:30 p.m. Join us for a casual neighborhood ride that will last about one hour. Routes are on paved, shared-use paths, some sidewalks, and some short sections of quiet streets. We ride at the pace of the slowest rider – no one gets left behind. Rain at start cancels the ride; wet pavement does not.

  • Sunday, June 15, 10 a.m.: Starts at Grandma’s Ice Cream and Waffles (389 E. Gude Drive).
  • Sunday, July 19, 10 a.m.: Starts at Lil Cakes & Creamery (844 Rockville Pike).

Let’s eat ice cream after a ride on the Carl Henn Millennium Trail. This shared-use path is a 10.6-mile loop around the center of Rockville. We will start at this local business and end here if you want a treat. Rain at start cancels the ride; wet pavement does not.

Learn to Ride a Bike

There are many on-bike classes in the Washington, D.C. region that focus on the basics of bicycle riding. Additionally, the League of American Bicyclists hosts free online bicycling classes. There are also Smart Cycling videos available.
