Sharpen your skills, stay active, and enjoy tennis in Rockville! We offer instructor-led classes for beginners through experienced players, including youth, teens, and adults. Participants can join group lessons to build fundamentals and match-play skills or sign up for private, one-on-one coaching for personalized instruction. Tennis Instructors

Meet our experienced tennis instructors who bring a passion for the game and a commitment to player development. Whether you’re picking up a racquet for the first time or looking to refine advanced match strategy, our instructors provide supportive, high-quality coaching for all ages and skill levels. Joe Devine is a former varsity player at LaSalle College High School and a collegiate club tennis player at James Madison University with a lifelong passion for racquet sports. He has coached juniors and adults across the DMV and Philadelphia regions, serving as an assistant tennis professional at Magarity Tennis Center, Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Larry Hyde Tennis Camp, and Legacy Youth Tennis and Education.

Joe specializes in fundamentals-based, engaging instruction tailored to each player’s goals—from youth development to advanced match strategy for teens and adults. Experienced in leading progressive groups and private lessons, he is CPR/First Aid certified and committed to creating a positive, inclusive environment where players of all ages can grow and enjoy the game.

Tim Francis brings more than 30 years of experience in education and athletics to Rockville’s tennis and pickleball programs. A former standout player at Churchill High School and Montgomery Community College, he is recognized regionally as an MD–PA–Delaware doubles champion and singles finalist and is currently rated 4.2 (NPTA) and 4.0 (DUPR).

Tim has coached boys’ and girls’ teams at Sandy Spring Friends School and taught at Burn Brae and Carderock swim and tennis clubs. With extensive experience teaching health and physical education, he provides patient, adaptable instruction for players of all skill levels. Certified in PTR and PPR Level One, Tim is committed to delivering high-quality coaching that helps players of all ages build skills and develop a lasting love for the game.

Mehmet Yargici brings more than 30 years of experience to Rockville’s tennis programs, leading with expertise and passion. A USPTA Certified Professional since 2009, he has helped players of all ages strengthen their fundamentals, strategy, and confidence on the court.

Mehmet’s background includes competitive play at the national and international levels, along with coaching experience at Kentlands Tennis Club and with Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). He has also captained adult leagues in Montgomery County and coached interclub teams in Zurich, Switzerland.

Known for emphasizing proper technique and smart match play, Mehmet works with both beginners and advanced players. Since 1991, he has provided private instruction to help athletes reach their goals, making him a longstanding and valued member of Rockville’s tennis community.

Zehra Yargici is a dynamic USPTA-certified tennis instructor who has served the Rockville tennis community since 2008. With a passion for teaching, she helps players of all ages and skill levels build confidence and improve their game in a supportive environment.

From young beginners to adults refining match strategy, Zehra is dedicated to long-term player development. She has extensive experience with youth programs, including 10 and under tennis and summer camps, and regularly leads both adult and junior classes.

Zehra stays current in her coaching through training and workshops with the United States Tennis Association (USTA), ensuring high-quality instruction. Her encouraging style supports steady growth, from first successful rallies to confident match play.

Laskar Tennis Instructors

Laskar Tennis instructors provide high-performance coaching for juniors, youth, and adults, focusing on skill development, long-term growth, and a positive, engaging learning environment for players of all levels.

Essam Laskar is the director of Laskar Tennis, a nationally recognized tennis and pickleball provider and official partner of the City of Rockville. Under his leadership, Laskar Tennis was named a USTA 2025 Provider Champion, honoring excellence in program delivery, growth, and community impact.

Coach Essam combines on-court coaching with hands-on program management, focusing on quality instruction, clear player development pathways, and professional program execution. He is actively involved in coach development and program oversight to maintain a consistently high standard across all offerings.

Zuhayr Laskar is a high-performance tennis coach specializing in junior and youth development. He focuses on building strong fundamentals, competitive habits, and confidence through structured, age-appropriate training.

Known for creating a positive and engaging learning environment, Coach Zuhayr balances discipline with energy and fun, helping young players develop both their skills and their love for the game. His coaching emphasizes long-term growth, resilience, and enjoyment on the court.

Hadi Joyowidarbo is a high-performance tennis coach specializing in youth and adult development. He focuses on building strong fundamentals, competitive habits, and confidence through structured, level-appropriate training.

Known for his positive energy and ability to connect with players of all ages, Hadi creates an engaging and supportive environment while emphasizing discipline, consistency, and long-term growth.

Open Play at Community Centers

The Lincoln Park Community Center, Thomas Farm Community Center, and Twinbrook Community Recreation Center offer open gym schedules during drop-in hours featuring tennis and many other sports. No requirement to sign up, just show up and play!

Outdoor Tennis Courts

Courts are open from dawn to dusk and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. City recreation programs have priority over the use of the courts, so some may be reserved for class use and closed to the public. Lighted courts close at 10 p.m.
