Bikeway Improvements

Rockville Bike Advisory Committee (RBAC)

The City of Rockville is committed to creating safer opportunities for bicycling in the City for both transportation and recreation for all types of bicyclists.  Rockville citizens should be able to meet most of their daily needs by bicycle, if they so choose.  Bicyclists of all ages and experience levels should have convenient and comfortable access to public services and recreational, cultural, commercial, and employment destinations in the City.

Bikeway Plans
The Rockville Bikeway Master Plan was adopted in October 1998.  Implementation of the recommendations in the 1998 Plan, changes in local conditions, updated national guidelines, and increased interest in bicycling for both transportation and recreation warranted an update to the Plan.  The Rockville Bikeway Master Plan Update was adopted by the Mayor and Council on April 26, 2004.

Bikeway Projects
Since 1998, the City has completed the construction of over 20 miles of multi-use paths (including nearly all of the 10-mile Millennium Trail), signed nearly 20 miles of bicycle routes, and striped more than two miles of bike lanes.  The City is now preparing to construct a bicycle and pedestrian bridge across I-270 at MD 28 while working closely with developers to implement other sections of the bike network. As these large projects move forward, the City continues to construct safer street crossings for bicyclists and pedestrians.  Bicycle racks and lockers have been installed in many parts of the City, including City-owned recreation facilities, Metro stations, and Town Center.

Bikeway Programs
Rockville is the first city in Maryland to develop and implement a comprehensive Kindergarten through 5th Grade Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Education Program—a program that will serve as a model for the entire state.  The City continues to encourage year-round bicycling through various programs and events, such as the annual Ride for Rockville, Bike to Work Day, bicycle recycling, commuter assistance, and by providing free bicycles to children through the “Character Counts” program.

Rockville Bicycle Map
The City of Rockville has produced a user-friendly bicycle map for navigating the City’s bikeways.  It shows the Rockville bikeways and destinations such as streets, parks, schools, and Metro stations.

To obtain a printed copy of the Rockville Bicycle Map, please visit City Hall or contact the Department of Recreation and Parks at the address below.

Get Involved with Bicycling in Rockville
The Rockville Bike Advisory Committee (RBAC) provides essential guidance to the City for implementing many of Rockville’s bikeway projects and programs.  All Rockville residents can help provide ideas for new bicycle facilities and identify locations where maintenance work is needed (such as removing hazards, sweeping, and improving pavement surfaces).

Facility Improvement Request Form: Help keep Rockville’s multi-use paths and sidewalks clean. If you see any glass, debris or tree branches that are obstructing the paths, please let us know so we can clean them up.  Call the Department of Recreation and Parks at 240-314-8626 or submit this online form to recommend maintenance and other bikeway improvements to the City.

Bicycle Safety
Rockville has developed many bicycle lanes, paths, and routes during the past decade, and it is important to know how use these bike facilities safely.  This page contains information about bicycle laws and safety tips for both bicyclists and automobile drivers.  You will also find the proper procedures for fitting your helmet and sizing your bike.

Bicycling for Transportation
Bicycling to work, to the store, to visit friends, and to other activities is a great way to get around Rockville.  Bicycling is a cost-effective, non-polluting way to build exercise into daily travel.
