Safer Streets: ‘It’s Up to Us,’ Rockville

The City of Rockville is calling on the community to join the “It’s Up to Us…” campaign — a collective effort with a simple but important message: Everyone plays a role in keeping Rockville’s streets safe.

In 2020, the Mayor and Council adopted the Vision Zero goal of zero traffic-related deaths or serious injuries by 2030. To reach that goal, the city is putting human health and safety at the center of road network design. That includes the Mayor and Council’s 2023 approval of the city’s Pedestrian Master Plan, safety audits of 30 intersections under the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, and Complete Streets studies of safety improvements along five roadways across Rockville. The city has also recently built new sidewalks along West Gude Drive, Potomac Valley Road, Welsh Park Drive and Crawford Drive.

With a departmentwide staffing increase, the Rockville City Police Department is better positioned to reduce crashes, address unsafe driving and save lives. By mid-September, RCPD had already taken 6,188 enforcement actions in 2026 — an increase of 1,246 over the same period last year. RCPD continues to coordinate traffic and pedestrian safety initiatives with partner police agencies, with the goal of increasing traffic safety awareness citywide.

During the first half of 2026, the city’s awareness efforts also included sharing 79 Vision Zero-related social media posts that averaged 962 views each. Vision Zero- and transportation-related content appeared in 21 news articles on the city’s website, where the articles and the Vision Zero webpage received a combined 9,408 views. Since January 2024, Vision Zero-related videos produced by Rockville 11 (channel 11 on county cable) have received 1,851 views on the city’s YouTube channel.

But these efforts alone won’t get Rockville to its Vision Zero goal. The “It’s Up to Us …” campaign reminds community members that whether driving, walking, rolling, biking or taking transit, everyone has a responsibility to pay attention, follow the rules of the road and look out for one another.
